Island Fling

11th - 17th August 2003

21 July 2003

Northbeat, the Scottish based dance organisation, has announced its eighth Island Fling in August on the Isle of Skye.  For the first time the Island Fling will take place over six days, although special 3-day packages will be available if required.  For the first time we'll be having music workshops (accordion, fiddle and Gaelic song).  This has been made possible by the kind support of An Drochaid.

The list of tutors and accompanists is now complete — they are: Stuart Anderson (accordion), Cairina Campbell (fiddle), John Caskie (Old Time), Rob Corcoran (Papa Stour Swords), Scott Gordon (accordion), Jennifer Greene (Country & Ladies Step), Campbell Hunter (Country & Old Time Dance), Karin Ingram (Lancers & Quadrilles), Wilma Kennedy (Step & Gaelic Song), Judith Linton (fiddle), Sandra MacKay (Gaelic Song), Louise MacKenzie (fiddle) Iain MacPhail (accordion), Ross MacPherson (accordion), Rae McColl (Step Dance), Charlie McKerron (fiddle), Nicol McLaren (accordion), Anne Sheach (Country Dance),  Alpin Stewart (Gaelic Song) and John Thomson (Old Time & Ceilidh).  Unfortunately Duncan Chisholm and Alasdair MacCuish had to withdraw owing to work commitments.

Format will be two workshops each day and entertainments such as dances and concerts each night.  There will be the usual Welcome Concert on the Monday evening — a chance to get to know tutors and musicians better.  On Tuesday night Robbie Shepherd and his "Take the Floor" team will be joining Iain MacPhail and his Scottish Dance Band and special guests for a broadcast.  Wednesday evening's entertainment will be a "Workshop Showcase", where the musicians have a chance to perform what they have learned.  There are no workshops on Thursday afternoon, and you will have the choice of "doing your own thing", or joining in one of the arranged excursions.  On Thursday evening we'll be dancing in the stunning Clan Donald Centre.  Friday night will be another concert and dance with the Workshop Musicians and on Saturday night we'll have the Final Fling Ceilidh — a chance to show off the new skills (or just show off in some cases!) — in the evening.

All this takes place in South Skye, at the Gaelic college Sabhal Mòr Ostaig near Armadale.  Previous Fling-ers will know that this course is as much about good food as it is about dance!  It’s amazing how much you can put away when you are so active all day and the quality of the food is superb.  Forget all notions of losing weight for the week.

It’s a residential week with all accommodation usually on-campus but Northbeat are offering alternative options. Those who wish to organise their own B&B or camp nearby can take advantage of a reduced rate that omits just the accommodation and breakfast — all other food, entertainment and tuition is included.  Both the Gold and Silver packages include tickets to cross to Skye by either the bridge or the car ferry from Glenelg to Kylerhea (please state which route preferred when booking).  If you are only able to drop in on individual classes or evening events these too are open.

Costs for the week are as follows:

Gold:                                      6 nights bed & full Scottish breakfast, 6 lunches, 6 dinners (including Saturday night buffet), 10 workshops, coffee and cakes twice a day at break-times, soft drinks during workshops & at meals, 6 x evening entertainment, crossing ticket  £390.00
